The 2024 Human Trafficking Educational Webinar Series is being hosted by McLaren Central Michigan, Central & Western Area Health Education Center, Central Michigan University College of Medicine Rural Health Equity Institute, and the Michigan Center for Rural Health.

Part I - April 9, 12 - 1:30 PM EST: Rachel Timothy, Talks About Her Book “Open Blind Eyes” and Personal Experiences:

  • Open Blind Eyes brings you face to face with the reality of sex trafficking in America through the true story viewpoint of a girl from a small town. Rachel was only nine years old when she was first approached by a perpetrator who was known to her as a teacher and coach.
  • She goes into detail of the process of being groomed and how the evil of what was happening to her in the dark remained unseen by everyone around her.
  • She describes how she coped for so many years by blocking out the memories only to have them resurface when she was an adult with a family of her own.


Part II - April 16, 12 – 1:30 PM EST: Carmen L Kucinich, FBI Victim Specialist, Presentation Objectives:

  • Define human trafficking
  • Recognize populations vulnerable to human trafficking
  • Identify indicators of human trafficking
  • Identify the needs of human trafficking victims (local case examples provided)
  • Understand some of the dynamics within trafficking and techniques in working with survivors of human trafficking
  • Know how and where to report suspected trafficking

Part III - May 14, 12 - 1:30 PM EST: Magdalena Lopez, R.I.S.E. Sexual Assault Team Coordinator & Beth Nesbitt, BSN, RN, McLaren Central Michigan SANE Coordinator

  • R.I.S.E. Advocacy provides intimate partner and sexual assault support services in Clare, Isabella, and Gratiot counties.
  • Learn more about the coordinated process of services and empowerment provided to survivors through community, healthcare, and law enforcement organizations.
  • Further understand the treatment, training, and educational resources provided by these positions and organizations.
